Great geologic forces created the Pacific Northwest where I live and work. Tectonic plate collision, volcanic eruption, and glacial excavation shaped this region. Today these underlying forces remain a part of everyday life and they inspired the sculpture, "Mountain." It was an exciting challenge to express this natural environment within the boundaries of the human form.
This sculpture is a perfect example of the 'visual poetry' in my work to which I often refer. "Mountain" presents reality beyond symbolic gesture and it carefully avoids academic or decorative trappings. As visual poetry it simultaneously embodies geomorphic influences and realizes the human figure. Form and content become one and the same. Musculature and terrain share definition. As a result the sculpture is not an idea about a mountain as much as it is a conscious experience of being a mountain
